Ubiquinol Warning…

by Alan Graham

Reminder of my strident philosophy…NO social-media. Today I received an email from Facebook that a “Vocal notice had been downloaded”…I don’t know what that is & I don’t care what that is – but I DON’T LIKE IT…. Besides I’m told, in order to reply to a Facebook notice I would have to join FB…so take a deep breath and hold it – I’ll be right back……………………..

Hours later……So anyway, as happens from time to time we have to reevaluate the situation.

I no longer take any of the forms of Ubiquinol or Ubiquinone with the Polysorbate-80 that makes CoQ-10 Water-Soluble and better absorbed… like Qunol (in Black box at Walmart) or Quinogel (swanson brand). Polysorbate-80 has received quite a bit of bad press lately with allergic reaction problems and according to mercola, it could cause problems with your gut much like IBS.

I never noticed any problems after taking Quinogel for a couple of years but I feel there is cause for concern (for some if not many folks).

I also use to like the Jarrow brand of Ubiquinol QH-absorb but it turns out that it is GMO…..it has Soy but the Soy is in the form of phosphatidylcholine (from soy lecithin) so that’s not a big deal at all -BUT- the GMO is a deal breaker.

There is one very long amazon review by this fellow, RWM, who has done an extraordinary job of listing EVERYTHING about most of the major brands of Ubiquinol, so you can make easy comparisons, to include price per soft-gel….and based on his in-depth research I have switched to recommending the 3 brands below. Here is the amazon link for his reviews….www.amazon.com/…

  1. .. Life Extension Super Ubiquinol CoQ10 with Enhanced Mitochondrial Support… This Life Extension product is more expensive because it has that “Mitochondrial Support”, which is called PrimaVie┬« Shilajit fulvic acid complex. This complex enhances absorption (maybe a little bit) and provides bio-available trace minerals. This is likely my fave but it is expensive with that Shilajit Fulvic-acid in there – of course that is why I like it better. www.swansonvitamins.com/…
  2. .. Doctor’s Best, Best Ubiquinol (60 Count)… Doctor’s Best has this NON-polysorbate-80 “Formula” that will improve absorption (MCT’s, Lecithin & Rosemary Extract) – it doesn’t improve absorption as well as Polysorbate-80, BUT those things in the Doc’s Best are actually very good for you…unlike the Polysorbate-80. www.swansonvitamins.com/…

MCT Trivia — Medium-Chain Triglycerides penetrate the Cell-wall…then they penetrate the wall of the Energy-Producing Organelle, the Mitochondria, to give adults instant energy & gives babies energy to grow…babies would likely die without the MCT’s in breast-milk….also found in butter & coconut oil & every damn baby-formula on the shelf at Walmartbut Doctors & Dieticians tell us the SatFat (MCT’s) in Coconut oil is bad for us….make up your freaking mind !
  3. .. Swanson’s Ubiquinol (120 count)… This product was not reviewed by the guy because it is a “House-brand”, not a brand name… but this is a good one…it is NON-GMO & uses Sunflower Lecithin, not Soy. At $42 it looks expensive (but it’s really only $11 a month) because this large 120 count means it will last 4 months at 100 mg daily. www.swansonvitamins.com/…

The reviewer on amazon did say one thing in his otherwise excellent discussion of CoQ-10, that was slightly misleading…He said Ubiquinone was Fat-Soluble and that Ubiquinol was Water-soluble (making it much better absorbed)….No, it’s not “Water-Soluble”, if it were, there would be no need to put Polysorbate 80 in some brands of Ubiquinol to make them Water-Soluble.

Here’s what he meant to say (I think)….“When two hydrogen atoms are added to the polar (water-soluble) head of the CoQ-10 molecule, the increased mass will make Ubiquinol slightly more water-soluble than Ubiquinone. However, due to the larger total mass of the non-polar tail of the molecule, it is still more Fat-soluble than Water-soluble.”

SO…you should always take ANY form of CoQ-10 with a Fat-containing meal because it must catch a ride with a fat molecule to make it across the gut.

I’ve mentioned “enhances absorption” and “being Bio-available”…both of those things are great BUT neither thing, necessarily, means the nutrient will actually be used by the individual cells…and lots of things are natural & organic, but are NOT good for you….hummm, like Soy.

Don’t you love it when someone pees on your leg and tells you it’s raining??
